Coaching FAQs

  1. What sort of coach do I need?

I have found that a successful coaching relationship depends more on rapport and mutual respect than anything else. My approach is integrative, so I use different techniques depending on what is best for my client. You may decide to have leadership or executive coaching because it is offered by your organisation, but I also have private clients who want to explore similar themes. All coaching should help you to deepen your self-understanding, improve your wellbeing, and move on from wherever you feel stuck.

  2. What can I expect from a coaching session?

A time and space for you to talk and to think, in confidence, and without judgement. We will discuss goal(s) for the session, and for the longer term, and I will structure the session in a way which works for you. Ideally, a session will have a benefit in and of itself, as well as if it is part of a series.

  3. What is the difference between executive coaching and leadership coaching?

Probably not very much (see 1 above); but “leadership coaching” will tend to have more of a focus on the principles and models of leadership, and how you want to define and conduct yourself as a leader. Executive coaching is broader; the focus can be very specific (such as preparing for a new role, or managing imposter syndrome), or much more general (such as addressing why you may be feeling unfulfilled in your role, or working out what you want from your career).

  4. What do I need to prepare in advance of a session?

You will have thought about what you would find useful to discuss in the session, and perhaps an idea of what you want from coaching overall. It often takes clients some time to define their goals - for each session, and for the longer term - and we will do that together at the start of the session. Sometimes you may choose to do some reading or work between sessions which we review once completed.

  5. Do I need to take notes?

This is a personal choice. Some people like to note down thoughts and ideas as they go along, or the actions they feel ready to commit to. Others don’t write anything at all. Just do what you feel is right.

  6. How long is a session and how many sessions do I need?

A session is generally 1-1.5 hours. Some coaching techniques lend themselves to a shorter session of an hour - it depends on your style and motivation, which we discuss before starting. The number of sessions is also something you are likely to work out as you go along, and again, something we review together.

  7. Can I have a coaching session online?

Yes. Ideally we will have met in person first, but Covid 19 has made this more challenging. I find that a video call is just as effective as coaching face to face. However, I don’t do telephone calls without video as reading body language and non-verbal signals is a crucial part of what helps me to be effective as a coach. Zoom is my preferred platform.

  8. How often do I need coaching?

This is entirely personal. In general, clients seem to benefit from seeing a coach every three to four weeks. We can meet more regularly early on, when we are working on goals, but it really is a question of working out what suits your needs.

  9. How do I know whether coaching has worked or not?

You will set goals for your coaching, and we will regularly review how you feel you are progressing. Success can take many forms; seeing something from a different perspective; finding a more productive way to work with someone; having a conversation you had been putting off; doing something you had not managed to achieve before. You are in control of setting your goals and deciding what success looks like.

  10. How much does it cost?

Our first meeting, whether online or in person, is free. It will give us a chance to see whether we have a rapport, and to discuss your expectations for coaching. For full sessions, rates depend on whether I am coaching private individuals, corporate clients, or charities. I am happy to design creative packages depending on needs and budget.
